How to Write About What You Didn’t Finish Writing About

So, I have to let you know this isn’t the issue/article/poem I want to share because that one doesn’t exist yet. It’s like what that Renaissance sculptor Mike said, “every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it,” only it’s not as if there’s some poetic meditation that preexists in the paper of this notebook on “How To Make a Simple Cup of Tea.” But that’s the problem with what I hoped to share this week. While writing about making a simple cup of tea I began to wonder that a simple cup of tea does exist inside this notebook, like Michelangelo’s sculptures, since this notebook is made up of parts of tea: water, leaves, energy, and time.

Well, so “These Things” inspired me recently:

  • From the Ash - Enjoy four minutes of hypnotic footage of a dude mountain biking through fire on a burn at Philmont Scout Ranch.

  • Sweet Dreams - Yes, the 1983 tune by the Eurythmics, only this time played on a hurdy gurdy. If you don’t know the hurdy gurdy, this video is for you.

  • These 3 Practices by Bill Gates Will Change How You Read - If you’re like me and tired of finding yourself at a screen drooling on yourself by 7:30 too many nights a week, this article really helped me frame my reading habits.

  • Son of a Witch - I know, sharing all these things from the temporal arts that require time and attention to traverse isn’t cool but these are what inspired me and Justin Johnson is an amazing guitar player and it doesn’t seem to matter how many strings the guitar has, whether it’s made of wood or an old shovel, he’s got the blues.

  • How to Reheat and Reuse Leftover French Fries - that’s right. Problem solved.
