These Things: The Poem That Is Light That Is Inked in a Body

Davis, California. January 2020.

I wanted to let you know that it’s been snowing in Boise and so I put studded tires on my bicycle but today I’m in San Francisco finishing up a couple of tattoo projects that are really meaningful to me and that’s a good thing because what’s imprinted in the skin could be a reflection of the light within a body and in my situation it was reflected through other bodies of light called poets and specifically Frank O’Hara and Walt Whitman whose great body electric sings in me in his poem “There was a child went forth every day” which affirmed for me one January 29th in 1991 that to learn and grow and experience life is a good thing until you’re old enough to realize as Frank O’Hara described in his poem “Why I am a Not a Painter” that he, like me, is a poet and so as the metaphor goes I’m not trying to be a painter, I’m working on some poetry in San Francisco while finishing up a couple of tattoo projects that are really meaningful to me and it’s snowing in Boise.

In Other News, we have some big news coming your way in the next edition of These Things! If you love short films, you’re going to be stoked! Especially if you’re going to be in Boise on April 18, 2020.

These Things too inspired me recently:

  • Danny MacAskill joins a gym - Bicycle street trials legend Danny MacAskill decides to join a gym...it’s just about finding the perfect workout for his bicycle.

  • 15 Habits of Lucky People - Some people like Twitter and some don’t. Our president overuses it I think but when used effectively it can uplift the consciousness of people who need a few examples of how to get lucky. Uh, be lucky.

  • Taylor Swift on song writing - I always love a little insight into the thinking and processes of other artists and I really dig Taylor Swift’s music and business ethic. This is a cool interview with her on how she approaches making songs.
