These Things: A Goathead Fest, Podcast, and a Bicycle Race

Like a bicycle hub and spoke pattern, all things in this special edition of These Things begin with bicycling and move out from there.

What’s a Goathead Fest!?!

The first (annual) Boise Goathead Fest (August 3 and 4, 2018) is looking for “OG Ambassadors.” Boise Bicycle Project, in cooperation with New Belgium Brewing, is changing the format of the Tour de Fat bicycle festival to:

  • Eradicate the puncture vine that produces goathead thorns in the Boise area
  • Keep rolling with the pedal-powered parade (Jimmy, ED at BBP, wants to make this the largest in the country so, as he says, “come ride with us.”)
  • continue to provide financial support to local bicycle-focused nonprofits.

Become an OG Ambassador here (doesn’t matter if you can’t make the parade or even live in Boise)

The Morning Ride Podcast

If you enjoy witty, sometimes comedic, and highly personal storytelling, check out The Morning Ride Podcast featuring Jeffery Oliver (oh yeah, that’s me). It's unedited, mostly unscripted, and recorded on my bicycle commute into the office.

This is week three and it’s beginning to fall into a rhythm so I recommend starting with one of the episodes called out below.

Finally made it!

I finally made it to the Boise Twilight Criterium last weekend! It’s a short course road bicycle race where riders average 30 mph for 60-90 minutes depending on your group. Our good friends John and Brenda of Feat1stFilms made a cool 42 second short film of the 2017 Twilight Criterium.

They’ve also recently worked with the 208 Ensemble and Project Flux to make a music/dance video on Carolyn Shaw’s music Lime and Felt.

Oh, and while we’re on Feat1stFilms, you should also check out the documentary shorts on their website--really great storytelling of some interesting folks around the Pacific Northwest.

We all fall toward the beauty,

Jeff O.
