Afterlife: Without Apples | A Poem by Susanna Mishler

April 9 - Daily poem for National Poetry Month: “Afterlife: Without Apples” by Susanna Mishler from “Termination Dust.”

About the photo. I did not use a photo of apples to be ironic. If you listen to the poem, what’s happening? What gets left behind? I thought to see a thing that is described as not being where we are going in the poem is interesting to me–a memento mori of sorts. Let me know what you think.

NOTE: Susanna and I are great friends, but I’ll be honest–reading one of her poems is intimidating for me because she is such a brilliant reader, and especially of her own poems. It’s exciting to be so challenged by a poet I admire. I highly recommend this collection of poems if you enjoy poems with natural imagery and Alaska landscapes.
