These Things: Where did the universe come from?

“The early cosmologies naturally placed man at or near the centre of the universe, but, since the time of Copernicus we have been demoted to a medium sized planet going round a medium sized star somewhere near the edge of a fairly average galaxy. We are now so humble that we would not claim to occupy any special position.” – from the abstract to Stephen Hawking’s 1966 thesis at Cambridge University.

I’m sure you heard that Stephen Hawking died at age 76. The New York Times presents a glimpse of his life in this obituary.

I never know what to think when someone like Hawking dies but I’m flooded with emotions of wonder and admiration for someone who continued to pursue some glint of light from the stars, some wonder.

Otherwise, I met a couple of animator/illustrators on Instagram this week who inspire me. Danny Casale (@coolman_coffeedan) for his use of humor to display what is human and Timothy Goodman (@timothygoodman) for the positivism in his illustrations.
