These Things: Physical Books, Cortisol, Bigfoot, and Jennifer Lawrence
“Our job in this life is not to shape ourselves into some ideal we imagine we ought to be, but to find out who we already are and become it.”
— Steven Pressfield, “The War of Art”
In case you you’re like me and indulging in the beauty of autumn light without consideration of our time and place in space in regard to the tilt of the planet and lilting meniscus-like arc of the sun as it cruises its way ever lower to the horizon through the blaze of autumn among the birch along a river on a bicycle ride home in the northern hemisphere--the fall and winter holidays are upon us.
I love this time of year when I simultaneously want to gather with friends and family and at the same time walk alone along the river or cozy up with a book and be led into those other places. I think these things are going to help me maintain a sense of self and community over the next few weeks:
“Why I read Physical Books And Start Most of My Writing By Hand” - Here’s a test for you: do you retain more reading a physical book or a screen? Can you write better on the page or at a keyboard?
“Graduate Research at Boise State Shows Hiking Lowers Stress Levels” - Cortisol is a steroid hormone that is released in response to stress, among other things...so go for a walk.
Jennifer Lawrence, of “The Hunger Games” and more recently Darren Aronofsky’s “Mother” (think “mother” earth), shows us how to become irresistible conversationalists in this analysis of 50 videos of JL interviews.
Bigfoot is just a myth. Right? Listen to this new podcast, “Wildthing Episode 1: Grover” and re-think what you think you think about Bigfoot. This is really good.
I’ve been drinking the Four Sigmatic chaga and reishi mushroom elixirs to keep my immune system running.
The Morning Ride Podcast
The Morning Ride Podcast (Season 2) is a pedal-powered blog-style podcast, loosely scripted and adamantly unedited on topics of creativity, music, film, poetry, philosophy, bicycles, and ways I’m working to be a better human. I record these on my bicycle commute to the office every Monday and Thursday. Recently:
2.9 Vegan Goodness With Friends and Family in Oakland and San Francisco
2.6 Gnostic Gospels, Archetypes, and False Info about Carl Jung
There is no until. Stay inspired.
